- Taliban parade through Qalat City in a show of strength
Afghanistan's Taliban insurgents were seen marching in the city of Qalat on Thursday, in video released on its social media Footage of armed Taliban fighters marching in the city of Qalat was uploaded to social media on Thursday. Dressed in white head-to-toe uniforms and flak jackets, the Islamist militants carried firearms as they marched in a straight line through the city centre. The Taliban called for unity ahead of Friday prayers, the first since they seized power. They asked imams to persuade people not to leave Afghanistan amid the chaos at the airport, protests and reports of violence.
- Ever Given, forgiven? The ship that blocked Suez Canal in March, crosses the canal again
ISMAILIA (Egypt) (Reuters) - The giant container ship Ever Given, which blocked the Suez canal for six days in March, crossed the waterway on Friday for the first time since it left Egypt after the incident. The ship, en route from the United Kingdom to China, crossed the canal among a convoy of 26 vessels sailing from the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea, the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) said in a statement. Another 36 ships crossed the waterway from the south. A group of SCA senior pilots and two tugboats escorted the Ever Given throughout its journey through the canal, the authority said in a statement. The vessel, one of the world's largest container ships, became jammed across the canal in high winds on March 23, halting traffic in both directions and disrupting global trade. Once it was dislodged, the 400-metre (1,312-foot) vessel left Egypt on July 7, 106 days after becoming wedged across a southern section of the waterway. Egypt released the Ever Given after protracted negotiations and an undisclosed settlement reached between the SCA and the ship's owners and insurers. It arrived in the Dutch port of Rotterdam on July 29 before heading to Felixstowe, England. [L8N2P454R] Roughly 15% of world shipping traffic transits the Suez Canal, the shortest shipping route between Europe and Asia. Friday's voyage through the canal was the Ever Given's 22nd in the waterway. Shipping trafficking websites Marinetraffic.com and Vesselfinder.com showed the ship in the Red Sea after crossing the canal. - U.S. calls on OPEC and its allies to increase oil production
By Trevor Hunnicutt (Reuters) -President Joe Biden's top aides are pressuring OPEC and its oil-producing allies to boost production in an effort to combat climbing gasoline prices that they see as a threat to the global economic recovery. Biden's national security adviser Jake Sullivan criticized the world's major oil producers, including Saudi Arabia, for what he said were insufficient crude production in the aftermath of the global COVID-19 pandemic. "At a critical moment in the global recovery, this is simply not enough," he said in a statement. The unusual statement ratcheted up international pressure and comes as the administration tries to contain a range of rising prices and supply bottlenecks across the economy that have fuelled inflation concerns. Biden has made the economic recovery from the recession triggered by the coronavirus pandemic a key priority for his administration. The administration is pressing countries within OPEC+, which groups the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries with Russia and other big producers, "on the importance of competitive markets in setting prices," Sullivan said. "Higher gasoline costs, if left unchecked, risk harming the ongoing global recovery," he added. "OPEC+ must do more to support the recovery." International benchmark Brent crude was trading at just under $70 a barrel on Wednesday, down 1%. That is lower than the prices above $77 in early July, but still represents an increase of nearly a third from the beginning of the year. [O/R] OPEC+ has been gradually easing a record output cut of 10 million barrels per day, about 10% of world demand, made in 2020 as oil use and prices recover from the pandemic-induced slump. As of July, the cut had been eased to about 5.8 million bpd. At a meeting held in July, OPEC+ agreed to boost output by 400,000 bpd a month starting in August until the rest of the 5.8 million bpd cut is phased out. OPEC+ is scheduled to hold another meeting on Sept. 1 to review the situation. The White House on Wednesday also directed the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which polices anti-competitive behavior in domestic U.S. markets, to investigate whether illegal practices were contributing to higher U.S. gasoline prices. "During this summer driving season, there have been divergences between oil prices and the cost of gasoline at the pump," Biden's top economic aide, Brian Deese, wrote in a letter to FTC chair Lina Khan. He encouraged the FTC to "consider using all of its available tools to monitor the U.S. gasoline market and address any illegal conduct." - Soccer-Messi signs for Paris St Germain after leaving Barcelona
By Antony Paone and Manuel Ausloos PARIS (Reuters) -Lionel Messi joined star-packed Paris St Germain on Tuesday after leaving Barcelona, the club where he had begun and expected to end his career. Messi, a six-times winner of the Ballon d'Or for Europe's best soccer player, signed a two-year contract with an option for a third year, the club said in a statement on its website. The move will add the Argentine, one of the best players of his generation, to an already formidable PSG attack that includes Brazil's Neymar and French World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe. "I am excited to begin a new chapter of my career at Paris Saint-Germain," PSG quoted Messi as saying. "I am determined to help build something special for the club and the fans, and I am looking forward to stepping out onto the pitch at the Parc des Princes." The arrival of Barcelona's record scorer, with 672 goals, will boost Qatari-owned PSG's ambitions to win the prestigious, and lucrative, European Champions League for the first time. "He has made no secret of his desire to continue competing at the very highest level and winning trophies, and naturally our ambition as a club is to do the same," PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said. PSG wasted little time in targeting Messi after the heavily indebted Catalan club made clear it could not afford to keep him because of La Liga's financial fair play rules. Crowds of supporters thronged to the club's Parc des Princes stadium, chanting and setting off smoke flares. "It's going to be mad. There's a legend arriving, after all," said supporter Florent Chauveau. Messi arrived in Paris on a private jet earlier in the day with his wife and three children, waving to hundreds of supporters gathered outside the airport before being whisked to a private hospital for a medical. He later waved to dozens of fans who had assembled beneath the balcony of his hotel room. FROM TEARS TO SMILES Only two days ago, Messi had wept as he bade farewell to his boyhood team, describing his feelings at being told he had to leave as like having "a bucket of cold water poured over me". However, he said he wanted to carry on competing and that he still harboured ambitions to win another Champions League trophy - one that his new club has never won, despite Qatar Sports Investment's lavish spending. Neymar and Mbappe were already the two most expensive soccer players in history, and the addition of Messi to Mauricio Pochettino's PSG line-up could rival the unstoppable triumvirate that he formed at Barcelona with Neymar and Luis Suarez. Messi will wear the number 30 shirt, the club confirmed in a video posted on its Twitter feed, headlined "a new diamond in Paris". Messi, who won four Champions Leagues and 10 domestic league titles with Barcelona, joins several other big names arriving at PSG on a free transfer this summer. Spain defender Sergio Ramos was no longer wanted at Real Madrid, Dutch midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum had run down his contract with Liverpool and Italy's Euro 2020-winning goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma also joined after his contract with AC Milan ran out. The arrival of Messi, whose last contract with Barcelona was worth a total of 555 million euros ($650 million) and reported to be the most lucrative in world sport, is also set to provoke a renewed new debate about UEFA's financial fair play rules. Soccer's European governing body introduced the rules in 2009 in an attempt to restrict the power of free-spending owners to buy success, but their success is debatable. The star-power of Messi, who has 245 million followers on Instagram, will be welcome news for Ligue 1 as a battle rages between broadcasters over the price of its television rights, crucial to the finances of the clubs. - Asian stocks on backfoot as concern over Delta variant saps confidence
By Paulina Duran and Matt Scuffham SYDNEY/NEW YORK (Reuters) - Asian stocks started off on a weak footing on Tuesday after a largely soft performance on Wall Street and as persistent concerns over the spread of the Delta variant of the coronavirus dented sentiment and triggered falls in metals and oil prices. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan declined 0.4% in early trading, with Korea's KOSPI index down 0.56% while China's blue chip index CSI300 shed 0.33%. "With the Delta variant spreading, money managers who were over-invested in the re-opening trade continue to unwind that trade because it's not working right now," said Dennis Dick, a trader at Bright Trading LLC. Japan's Nikkei was UP 0.9% while Australia's benchmark S&P/ASX200 was 0.2% higher on the back of strong earnings results. Oil prices were recovering on Tuesday after falling as much as 4% in the previous session, which extended last week's steep losses amid a rising U.S. dollar and concerns that new coronavirus-related restrictions in China could slow a global revival in fuel demand. [OR] U.S. crude oil futures were trading at $66.82 per barrel, up $0.35 or 0.53%. Brent crude was at $69.29, up $0.25 or 0.36% higher. Gold stabilised after falling to a more than four-month low on Monday as strong U.S. jobs data bolstered expectations for an early tapering of the Federal Reserve's economic support measures. Spot gold XAU= was fetching $1,732.13 an ounce, up 0.16%. The strong jobs data lifted U.S. Treasury yields. Benchmark 10-year notes were last yielding 1.3237%, up from 1.3170% on Monday. "Having swum from a very inflation-better opinion this year to a very disinflation view up to a week or so again, so what we are we getting now again is another rotation into some of the reflation trades," said Sean Darby, a Jefferies strategist in Hong Kong. "The only thing that is different between now and the last 12 to 19 months is that it is likely to be accompanied by a stronger dollar." U.S. stock indexes were mostly soft, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.3%, the S&P 500 off 0.09% while the Nasdaq Composite added 0.16%. MSCI's gauge of stocks across the globe were 0.03% lower. In the U.S., the Senate came closer to passing a $1 trillion infrastructure package, though it still has to go through the House. Investors were still assessing whether Friday's strong U.S. payrolls report would take the Fed a step nearer to winding back its stimulus. "What we're seeing is a little bit of early profit-taking on the back of fear that tapering will come in earlier in September," said Sebastien Galy, senior macro strategist at Nordea Asset Management. "But as you can see, it has little impact because the effect of a better economy far outweighs the substitution effect of higher interest rates." However, the pace of tapering was still up in the air and would decide when an actual rate increase comes, he said. The Fed is currently buying $120 billion of assets a month. The spread of the Delta variant could argue for a longer taper. On the plus side, stocks have been mostly underpinned by a robust U.S. earnings season. BofA analysts noted S&P 500 companies were tracking a 15% beat on second-quarter earnings with 90% having reported. In the currency markets, the dollar index moved 0.02% higher, with the euro off 0.03% to $1.1732, its lowest since early April. The dollar held firm against the yen at 110.38 yen, near its highest level in about two weeks. The U.S. currency's broad rally came as U.S. Treasury yields spiked to three-week highs on the back of the strong jobs data and early Fed taper speculation. - Bitcoin, cryptos post 5th straight week of outflows -CoinShares data
By Gertrude Chavez-Dreyfuss NEW YORK (Reuters) - Bitcoin investment products and funds registered outflows for a fifth consecutive week, as investor sentiment remained cautious in the midst of increased global regulatory scrutiny, data from digital asset manager CoinShares showed on Monday. Outflows from the world's most popular cryptocurrency totalled $33 million in the week ended Aug. 6, compared with $19.7 million the previous week. But so far this year, bitcoin inflows remained a robust $4.2 billion. Total crypto outflows, meanwhile, added up to nearly $26 million, although CoinShares noted that the magnitude of outflows was much less than in May and June. Sluggishness in the crypto market was due in part to global regulatory crackdown, analysts say. "There's all this focus on crypto because with all the new financial products and innovative solutions, governments, which are here to protect investors, are going to wonder whether this is a good idea and so, they're going to look more into these," said Matthijs de Vries, chief technology officer at infrastructure provider AllianceBlock. Bitcoin on Monday hit an 11-week high above $46,000. Since mid-July, bitcoin has gained 46% against the dollar. Data also showed that ether, the token used in the Ethereum blockchain, also saw outflows of $2.8 million, from a nearly $9-million outflow the previous week. Last Thursday, Ethereum, the second-largest blockchain network, went through a major software upgrade, which is expected to stabilize transaction fees and reduce supply of the ether token. Ether's supply is being reduced through "burning," in which tokens are sent to specialized addresses that have unobtainable private keys. Without access to a private key, no one can use the tokens, putting them outside the circulating supply. About $59.2 million worth of ether tokens have been "burned" since Thursday's software upgrade, according to ultrasound.money, a website that tracks ether burning and supply. Investors expect ether to accelerate gains as the Ethereum network burns more of its tokens. Ether was last up 4.9% at $3,161.93. (Reporting by Gertrude Chavez-Dreyfuss; Editing by Marguerita Choy)
- S&P dips, just off record as energy shares fall
By Chuck Mikolajczak NEW YORK (Reuters) - The S&P 500 dipped on Monday, as fuel demand worries during a resurgent pandemic sent energy stocks lower but rising U.S. Treasury yields lifted financial stocks, keeping Wall Street's benchmark index near record levels. Energy shares were the worst performing of the 11 major S&P sectors, down 1.48% along with crude prices as mounting coronavirus cases and the potential for restrictions, particularly in China, raised worries about the fuel demand outlook. China reported more COVID-19 infections, while U.S. cases and hospitalizations were at a six-month high as the Delta variant spread. Financial shares gained, buoyed by a climb in the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield back above 1.30% to its highest level since July 16 as a report on job openings showed further evidence of an improving labor market. "In general, of the economically sensitive cyclicals, it is the interest-rate sensitives that are going to celebrate this normalization of yields, even if normal is 1.30% versus where we were a week ago, which was 1.12%. That is driving the action," said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at National Securities in New York. Investors will watch U.S. inflation readings this week for hints about the path of Federal Reserve policy. On Monday, Atlanta Fed president Raphael Bostic said the United States should be well past the pandemic crisis before the central bank raises rates. Richmond Fed President Tom Barkin said high inflation this year may have already met one of the Fed's benchmarks for raising interest rates. Later this month, a meeting of Fed leaders in Jackson Hole, Wyoming should provide insight into the central bank's potential plan to begin tapering its bond purchases. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 106.66 points, or 0.3%, to 35,101.85, the S&P 500 lost 4.17 points, or 0.09%, to 4,432.35 and the Nasdaq Composite added 24.42 points, or 0.16%, to 14,860.18. A strong earnings season has helped U.S. stocks climb to record highs over the past two weeks, as several consensus-beating results from major firms reinforced belief in a post-COVID economic recovery. As of Friday, analysts expected second-quarter profit growth of 93.1% for S&P 500 companies, according to IBES data from Refinitiv. Of the 443 companies in the index that have reported earnings so far, 87.4% beat analyst expectations, the highest on record. - Explosions heard as firefighters battle wildfire near Athens
Firefighters battled a wildfire on Tuesday (August 3) that raged uncontrolled on the outskirts of Athens in Greece's worst heatwave in over 30 years. More than 300 firefighters with 35 vehicles and 10 aircraft battled the blaze in a densely vegetated area in the suburb of Varympopi, on the lower slopes of Mount Parnitha, next to the national highway. Explosions coming from with the flames could be heard, as volunteer firefighters sprayed water on the wall of fire. In Athens, the power grid operator IPTO said the fire had damaged parts of the grid, posing a major risk to the electricity supply in parts of the metropolitan region. The fire also disrupted train services and forced authorities to seal off part of the highway. An unknown number of homes and othjer buildings were damaged. Temperatures of more than 40 Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) and high winds have fanned more than 100 wildfires in different areas of Greece in recent days. On Tuesday, some places recorded temperatures of over 46 Celsius (115 Fahrenheit). Europe is grappling with a summer of extreme weather, from heavy flooding in the north to the severe heatwaves and fires that have engulfed several areas in the Mediterranean region. - Iran warns of response if security threatened after ship attack -TV
By Parisa Hafezi DUBAI (Reuters) -Iran will respond promptly to any threat against its security, the foreign ministry said on Monday, after the United States, Israel and Britain blamed Tehran for an attack on an Israeli-managed tanker off the coast of Oman. Tehran has denied any involvement in the suspected drone attack on Thursday in which two crew members - a Briton and a Romanian - were killed. The United States and Britain said on Sunday they would work with their allies to respond to the attack on the Mercer Street, a Liberian-flagged, Japanese-owned petroleum product tanker managed by Israeli-owned Zodiac Maritime. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson described the incident as "clearly an unacceptable and outrageous attack on commercial shipping". "Iran should face up to the consequences of what they've done," Johnson told reporters on Monday. Britain summoned the Iranian ambassador on Monday. Later, Iran summoned the British Charge d'Affaires and Romania's top envoy in Tehran over their countries' "accusations against the Islamic Republic", Iran's semi-official Fars news agency reported. "Iran has no hesitation in protecting its security and national interests and will respond promptly and strongly to any possible adventure," Iranian state television quoted foreign ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh as saying. Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett had accused Tehran of "trying to shirk responsibility" for the attack, and called its denial "cowardly". Israel's foreign minister said on Sunday the incident deserved a harsh response. ISRAEL WILL 'SETTLE THE SCORE' Israel Defence Minister Benny Gantz said the attack was an intensification of what he called Iran's escalation and accused Tehran of intending to hurt and kill civilians. "Israel has a variety of tools and options to defend its citizens, and we will settle the score with anyone who tries to harm us at the time and place and in the way that suits us and our security," Gantz told the Israeli parliament. An unidentified Iranian official told Iran's Nournews news agency earlier that Tehran considered "the threats of Western officials and the Zionist regime (Israel) to be more of a propaganda gesture". "And Washington and London will be directly responsible for the consequences," the official told Nournews, which is close to Iran's Supreme National Security Council. In Washington, Secretary of State Antony Blinken predicted a "collective response" and said he did not think the incident necessarily signaled anything about Iran's incoming President Ebrahim Raisi, who takes office on Thursday. Iran and Israel have exchanged accusations of carrying out attacks on each other's vessels in recent months. Tensions have increased between Iran and Israel since 2018, when then U.S. President Donald Trump ditched Tehran's 2015 nuclear deal with six world powers and reimposed sanctions that have crippled Iran's economy. Israel has voiced concerns about efforts by Iran and U.S. President Joe Biden's administration to revive the nuclear pact, under which Iran curbed its sensitive nuclear work in exchange for the lifting of sanctions. "In any agreement, should there be one, with Iran, it must also be based on the removal of its threat on the region," said Gantz.
