According to the BBC, Liz Truss, the leader of the Conservative Party and the UK's prime minister, announced her resignation in a statement outside Downing Street.
She claimed that she was unable to fulfil the promises made when she was chosen as the Tory leader and that she had informed the King of her intention to resign.
"I will continue to serve as prime minister until a successor has been picked", she added, adding that the Conservative leadership race will be finished within the following week.
