Shooting in Prague

Authorities in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, said that a shooting incident at a university on Thursday left 11 people—including the shooter—dead and nine others "seriously" injured.

The incident happened in the Charles University Faculty of Arts building, which is situated on Jan Palach Square, according to the Prague Rescue Service on X.

There were nine "seriously" injured individuals and sixteen with moderate to minor injuries.

Police had earlier declared that the building was being evacuated and that the suspected shooter had been "eliminated".

President Petr Pavel of the country opted to shorten his vacation to France after the fatal tragedy, according to Radio Prague International.

Prime Minister Petr Fiala has also cancelled his work programme in Olomouc and is travelling to Prague, where Pavel will meet with state security forces.

There will apparently be an emergency meeting of the Czech government tonight.

Authorities asked people to stay indoors and away from the location.

Social media users have shared videos showing a heavy police presence and gunshots.

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, tweeted her "deepest condolences" after the event.

"I offer the relatives of the deceased my sincere sympathies, as does the Czech people at large. We grieve beside you, we stand," she stated on X. (By Alex Ivanov in Prague for The Decision Maker)
