US Stock Markets Closed Mix, Europe At Historic Highs, European Markets Mainly Lower

US Markets summary


On Wednesday, both the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average set new highs, as the Dow extended its winning streak to a sixth day while the S&P 500 resumed a prior surge after a brief pause in intraday trade. After battling to stay afloat during the session, the S&P 500 rose 0.14 percent to 4,793.06, an all-time high and the year's 70th record close, while the Dow reached 36,488.63. The Nasdaq has continued to fall as a result of a broader sell-off in technology stocks.


Tesla (TSLA) shares fell as much as 2.2 percent in early trading as CEO Elon Musk sold another $1 billion of company stock, contributing to the Nasdaq's losses.


With this recent sale, he is one step closer to achieving his goal of selling a 10% ownership in the company. Tesla's stock fell 0.21 percent to $1,086.19 per share.

Tesla supporters, such as Wedbush analyst Dan Ives, remain optimistic about the firm. Ives believes the stock could hit $1,800 in the near future.



European Markets summary


European stock exchanges closed generally in the red on Wednesday, with trading volumes staying light as the year draws to a close, as the Christmas surge began to wane after five sessions.


As investors remain cautious due to uncertainty surrounding the economic outlook despite an increase in coronavirus cases, Frankfurt's DAX 30 ended 0.7 percent lower at 15,852 and Paris' CAC 40 finished marginally below a recent record high. Meanwhile, the FTSE 100 in London rose to a new 22-month high, aided by a lack of lockdowns till the end of the year.


In corporate news, Daimler named a new CEO to oversee its battery projects, while Teleperformance announced the $400 million acquisition of US process outsourcing start-up Senture.
